Last month we chatted to one of The Animation School’s talented first year students, Christopher Thwaites to find out more about life on the campus.
Today, we are profiling another one of out students: Michael Hlatshwayo!
Hi Michael, thanks so much for your time!
When did you realize that you wanted to study animation?
I did a gap year working at a church in a Year of your Life program. Towards the middle of the year I decided that animation would be my dream career, but didn’t know if it could happen. After some time and prayer, God confirmed it to me and that’s when I knew this was what I was going to do.
What subjects did you take in Matric?
Funnily enough, I took a business Matric at Damelin, so it was subjects like law, small business management and etc.
Out of everything you have been involved in so far, what is your favourite piece of work?
I really don’t have one seeing that I can always spot what’s wrong with my own work.
What is your favourite aspect of animation?
The creation of something I really enjoy building! Designing and creating the models is probably my strongest point so far.
What is your favourite animated movie of all time?
How to Train your Dragon, and with the new one coming out I’m super excited to have a all new favourite.
Can we have a link of your favourite animated short?
Sure! Click here
What would you like to do once you have finished studying?
I would like to work in the ad industry for a bit then pursue making The Bible into a full animated feature, page for page
Give us a break-down of your typical day at The Animation School.
Wow too much to say! I get to college at 11:30 before class at 1. In the afternoons I will work on different projects, or sometimes just practice different animation skills. Then I usually have more lessons until 4, and after that it’s free time to work on assignments and practice. I usually leave at around 10:30 or 11:30 at night, depending how hungry I am.
